Howard Laks Architects was founded in 1983 and has developed long term relationships within the Southern California planning and design community. These relationships and our regional knowledge become helpful when blending specific community requirements with individual project needs.

Howard Lakes, AIA
Howard Laks, AIA, is Principal of Howard Laks Architects and has been in practice for over thirty years.
Mr. Laks has received design awards for his work including; 2017 Preservation Award, Santa Monica Conservancy, AIA Los Angeles Next Award 2013, Westside Urban Forum 2014, Merit Award for North Hills Community Park and Best Mixed Use for Archstone Apartments in Santa Monica.
His signature works include Santa Monica Proper Hotel, The Lobster Restaurant at the entrance of the Santa Monica Pier, Bubba Gump Restaurant, located on the Santa Monica Pier and The Fidelity Building on Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica. Mr. Laks work has contributed to the vibrant and ongoing movement of contemporary regional Southern California Modernist design.
Mr. Laks received his Bachelors of Architecture in 1977 and his Master’s of Architecture in 1980 from UC Berkeley School of Architecture. Mr. Laks served as an associate professor at UC Berkeley School of Design from 1978 through 1980 and has held a teaching position at the UCLA Interior and Environmental Design Program since 1981. He served as a board member on the City of Santa Monica Architectural Review Board from 1996-2004, and as Chairperson from 2001-2002. Mr. Laks has been a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Local, State and National Chapters since 1988.
Jerry Montero is a project manager at Howard Laks Architects and has worked on a variety of projects including multi-family housing, single-family housing and public buildings.
His experience includes project design, design development, construction documents, project detailing, project scheduling and project utility management. Mr. Montero received his Bachelor of Architecture in 2001 from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo and his Masters of Architecture in 2005 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
His demonstrated skills in management, documentation, and delivery of complex projects make him a trusted project leader.
